Liverpool ran out worthy winners after an extraordinary Merseyside derby against Everton at Anfield.
|
The Reds went into the match in 14th place in the table - four behind their neighbours - but they closed the gap between themselves and the Toffees in sensational style as they romped to a 7-4 success.
Harold Barton proved to be the hero as he netted a superb hat-trick with other goals from Alf Hanson, Tom Morrison, Harold Taylor and Sydney Roberts capping a fine attacking display.
It was enough to see off the Blues, who still managed four goals of their own, with the famous Dixie Dean helping himself to a double.
It would seem trebles are something of a theme on this day in Liverpool's history with Jack Parkinson grabbing a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Wednesday in 1911 while the most recent one came in 1961 when Dave Hickson took home the match ball following a 5-0 rout of Leyton Orient in a Second Division game at Anfield.
