Javier Mascherano has all the qualities needed to captain Argentina, according to club manager Rafa Benitez.
|
Diego Maradona revealed his intention to make the Liverpool man skipper after being confirmed as Argentina boss yesterday.
And Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv: "Mascherano has the character and mentality to be a captain.
"It is an important situation for anyone - to captain their country. If someone says to you that you can be captain of England or Argentina or Spain, it is a massive honour because they are big, big countries.
"If he has the chance he could do it."
Maradona is a long-time admirer of Mascherano, who he once described as a 'monster' of a player.
The 24-year-old midfielder has 44 international caps to his name, many under current captain Javier Zanetti.
