The 59-year-old broadcaster, who was well known throughout the north-west for his distinguished career with the BBC, Radio City, Magic 1548 and City Talk, died on Monday of a suspected brain haemorrhage.
"It's a big loss for all of us. For the club, the fans and especially the family, so I'd like to send out my sympathy out to his wife, family and all of his friends," said Benitez.
"You never expect anything like this to happen. It was very, very bad news and a surprise for all of us. He was someone that you could see straight away was a good person.
"He was really important because he could help inspire the fans and I think he will be a big loss for them. You could see he was a passionate fan and someone who loved the club. For me, that's not the main thing though - the main thing is that he was a very nice person.
"Phil was someone who really loved the club. He was always happy - it is difficult for me to express this in English, but he was very kind and good company. He will be sorely missed."
