Spanish playmaker Luis Garcia and Danish international Daniel Agger were the star names on show for Liverpool Reserves as the Reds battled out a goalless draw with Bolton Wanderers at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground.
Garcia played in a central attacking role playing just off striker Ramon Calliste and was lively in his 45 minute appearance, setting up chances and coming close to scoring himself. Agger was solid as a rock at centre half and played for 53 minutes. For the second reserve game running Jack Hobbs captained the team.
Bolton fielded a largely inexperienced team but did include recent signing Oscar Perez.
Liverpool were unlucky not to find the elusive goal their play deserved on the night but that was largely down to a fine goalkeeping display from Bolton's stopper Przemyslaw Kazimerczak.
Liverpool had their first chance of the game after five minutes when Ramon Calliste's header was saved by Kazimerczak, following a good run and cross down the right side from Paul Anderson.
The Reds came even closer on 20 minutes when the excellent Danny Guthrie cut inside from the left and curled an effort towards the top right corner, but the effort was superbly kept out by the fingertips of Kazimerczak.
Two minutes later Luis Garcia had the Bolton defence chasing shadows with some wonderful skill. He turned two defenders inside out before setting up Paul Anderson whose effort was hacked away from the line by the Bolton defenders.
All the attacking threat came from Liverpool in the first half and after 26 minutes the Bolton keeper made another brilliant stop to keep out a fierce blast from Antonio Barragan, after a superb run from the Spanish right back.
Then after 37 minutes Kazimerczak showed excellent handling ability when he made a fine stop to keep out Guthrie's deflected free-kick.
Liverpool made a change at half-time when Adam Hammill came on for Luis Garcia. Then after 53 minutes Daniel Agger made way for Danny O'Donnell.
Liverpool came so close to a goal just short of the hour mark when Hammill cut in from the left and curled a superb effort just wide.
Calliste then had a great chance on 62 minutes but his close range effort was well kept out by Kazimerczak.
Lee Peltier came close to the opening goal for Liverpool after 72 minutes but his low free-kick brought another great save from the Trotters keeper.
