Steven Gerrard was not surprised to see Maxi Rodriguez called up into Argentina's World Cup squad.
The winger was seen as an outside bet for Diego Maradona's 23-man squad after not featuring for much of the qualification campaign.
However, his outstanding form since joining Liverpool from Atletico Madrid in January proved key - and Gerrard for one will be happy to see him in South Africa.
"Maxi is a fantastic player," said the Reds skipper.
"He's got good movement and as a footballer it's a pleasure to play with good players. That's what Maxi is. He is a fantastic player. He is an intelligent player and he can unlock defences."
Gerrard's words are echoed by Fernando Torres, who played with Maxi at Atletico.
"Maxi is the kind of player that is always up to the challenge," said the Spaniard. "The more his team needs him, the more he offers.
"Maxi is hungry and when you have his hunger you can achieve anything."
Maxi is one of 12 Liverpool players - Carragher, Gerrard, Johnson, Reina, Torres, Skrtel, Mascherano, Agger, Kuyt, Babel, Maxi and Kyrgiakos - set to feature at the World Cup, a number which smashes the previous record of eight at Italia 90.
