Steven Gerrard believes the first goal in tonight's Europa League clash with Lille could prove 'vital' in determining which team progresses into the quarter finals.
The French outfit hold a 1-0 lead from the first leg, though the captain admits Rafael Benitez's side will have to adopt a measured approach under the threat of the away goals rule.
"The next goal is the vital one," said Gerrard. "If we were to score first, it would give everyone a boost and be a setback for them.
"In that situation, I'd fancy us to go and win the tie. So getting that balance right between being solid defensively and hurting them at the other end is the key."
