Sotirios Kyrgiakos helped Greece keep a clean sheet in their World Cup qualifier against Ukraine on Saturday - but it’s Andriy Voronin’s country who will now be favourites to progress with a home leg to come in Kiev.
Kyrgiakos played all 90 minutes of the clash in Athens and will be looking for a similarly solid display in the Ukraine on Wednesday night as he bids to keep his South Africa 2010 dream alive.
Away from the drama of the World Cup play-offs, it was another busy round of international friendly matches for Reds.
Arguably the most eye-catching fixture of the weekend took place in Spain where two Xabi Alonso goals were enough to see off Argentina, for whom Lionel Messi was on the scoresheet.
Pepe Reina was the Reds' only representative in the Spanish squad and made an appearance as a substitute in the final minute. Anfield teammate Javier Mascherano played the full game for Diego Maradona's men.
Dirk Kuyt also completed the 90 minutes for Holland in their goalless stalemate with Italy. Ryan Babel was introduced to the action in place of Eliero Elia after 72 minutes.
Philipp Degen was in action for Switzerland but conceded the penalty which allowed Aston Villa's John Carew to give Norway a 1-0 victory, while Martin Skrtel played from the start as Slovakia sneaked a 1-0 victory over USA in Bratislava.
