Ahead of today's clash with Bolton, Rafa Benitez took time out to speak to radio journalists about his pre-game thoughts. Here's what he had to say.
On stalemate with Wolves...
I was quite happy because it was a clean sheet. The team was strong in defence, but because we did not do the right things in attack, we were not a threat. So we analyse things and we know we have to improve. We have five games without losing and we have more clean sheets. I think you have to look at the positives; Gerrard coming back, Riera coming back from injury too, Maxi in his first game. So I think there are a lot of positives even though we know it wasn't a good game. We can show this mentality as a team by working hard and if we improve in attack, we know we can beat anyone.
On finding positives from the draw at Molyneux...
As a manager you have to analyse the bigger picture. If every single week we see one step forward and one step back I think it would be a long season, but now we have to give confidence to the players. It was a clean sheet with a good performance in defence. We have to think this is positive and if it is not as good as we were expecting in attack then we have to improve, but don't forget now that we need more positives than negatives.
On Gerrard's comments that Liverpool are coming into form...
We went to the dressing room after the game, we knew it was a tough game and we knew that we didn't play well, but we also knew that we were very strong in defence. He (Gerrard) could see when he was watching the games from the stands the team was strong and we could win this game too, Tottenham was one of them. The players know that we are improving, they know we are much better in defence, which is a big difference, and they know we have to improve in attack and play with the same determination that we did against Tottenham.
On playing without Torres and Gerrard...
I think we can play well without Fernando and Stevie, but the question is for how long? We have won against United sometimes or against Chelsea and against other teams. We have played really well sometimes without Fernando, sometimes without Stevie and sometimes without both. But you have two top class players and you lose these two players for a while you know this can affect the team so you want to keep them on the pitch, but if they are not on the pitch we know we can still play well and we can win games.
On Steven Gerrard's form...
I was happy with the form of Gerrard the other day against Wolves, but he knows and we know too that we weren't playing well, but I was really pleased and really happy with his effort the other day in the training session. He was trying to do things well so that is the main thing for me. If he can carry on without injuries, with the same mentality pushing and trying to be a leader of the team it will be very good for us for the rest of the season.
On the right-back situation...
We have been trying to find solutions because we had Kelly injured and Degen was not playing too many games, but we bought Johnson because we needed to bring a player for this position. Also we know that Carra is a player who can play in different positions. He has played before at right-back and left-back and for the last five years he has been a fantastic centre-back, but now the team needs him as a right full-back and we know this is more demanding than centre-back, but he knows too that he has to work hard for the team and this will make the difference.
On losing Carra's organisation skills from the centre of defence...
I think a key role for us is a player that can talk and organise the defenders, but in the training sessions we work together with different positions and different players. The priority now is to fix the position of right-back. Kelly is coming back, Degen has had some good games playing more as a winger, Darby is also with us and every training session we try to fix and manage the team's position, but the player with the most experience is Carra - so we have to do this because it is best for the team.
On the January transfer window...
We are trying to find players. We are working hard but as soon as we finish the transfer window everybody is relaxed or at least they know 'okay we have to do this' because we cannot bring in anyone or we cannot move players so I think it will be good for us as soon as it finishes and then everyone can focus again.
On Bolton under Owen Coyle...
Every game in the Premier League is tough. He (Owen Coyle) will need time - that is true, he will need time if he wants to do thing his way, but I think still they are physically very strong and it will be tough. It will be difficult because they will try to play maybe more football, but still they have players who are good in the air. They are good from set pieces so we know it will be similar and if we can play our game with our style and control the game then maybe it will be easier for us. If we cannot, we know that we will have to fight from the beginning until the end.
On Kyrgiakos' form...
Sotirios has played really well. He is a good professional and at times we have played with Carra, Skrtel and Agger, so he has not had too many games. Now he has more opportunities and he is doing well. He is good in the air against target men, so we will see who can win, but at least we have a different option that we knew we needed.
On injuries...
Johnson is still progressing - he will be another three or four weeks. Torres is progressing too and will be three or four weeks, it depends on each individual. Benayoun could be another two or three weeks. Aurelio and Degen maybe one week.
