Liverpool's first team stars recently brought a touch of happiness to the lives of a group of Romanian orphans when they posed for photographs and signed autographs during a training session in the Ghencea Stadium on the eve of our UEFA Cup tie versus Steaua.
The Reds may not have got the result they deserved in Bucharest but for the terminally ill Romanian children it was an occasion they'll never forget. Members of the St Laurence hospice were thrilled to bits when they met the Liverpool players ahead of the 1-1 draw with Steaua.
It was a visit arranged by Anfield Chief Executive Rick Parry, who told Liverpoolfc.tv: "Meeting these kids helps put life into perspective really and we were delighted to help. It's not a lot of effort on our part but it was a great day for kids. We first met them in 2000 after we were drawn against Rapid Bucharest it was great to see them again, they are really nice, polite kids. Katherine who helps run the hospice has got them well educated and they are all Liverpool supporters."
Care team manager for the hospice and native Liverpudlian Katherine Georgescu spoke on behalf of all the children when she added: "The kids had such a brilliant time attending the training session and meeting the players, they haven't come back down to earth yet. We were so thrilled to be given 30 tickets to the game too and had a wonderful time. I can't tell you how much these two days have meant to the kids. They are on top of the world! We want to thank you all at the club."
