He's an Argentina international who has graced La Liga with fantastic goals and sublime technique - but what else do you know about our new winger?
Liverpoolfc.tv attempts to bring you up to speed with 10 facts about our new boy.
1) Maxi featured alongside long-time pal and new club-mate, Javier Mascherano, during his country's under-20 FIFA World Youth Championship triumph in 2001. He played a starring role in the success, top scoring with four goals in seven matches. He also had the unique honour of notching the first and last goal of the tournament.
2) He was born on January 2, 1981 and shares a birthday with American actor Cuba Gooding Jr, The Office actress Lucy Davis and Fulham midfielder Jonathan Greening.
3) Maxi grew up in Rosario, Sante Fe and lived just a few streets away from the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa - home to his boyhood heroes, Newell's Old Boys. At the age of 18 he realised the dream of wearing the red and black of 'The Lepers' and went on to score 20 goals in 56 league appearances in his first three seasons. The city of Rosario also blessed the Argentine game with current World footballer of the Year, Lionel Messi.
4) Maxi took over the Atletico armband when Fernando Torres joined Liverpool. Having played alongside him for several years at the Vicente Calderon, our number 9 is confident the winger will once again prove to be a top teammate. He told Liverpoolfc.tv: "One of the main qualities he has is to help strikers. He will help Stevie, Dirk or myself to score goals because he gets a lot of assists."
5) Rodriguez is nicknamed 'La Fiera' which translates as The Beast. There is even a pena (branch) of Atleti fans that have called themselves this in his honour.
6) He scored the winning goal in Diego Maradona's first match in charge of Argentina's national team. They beat Scotland 1-0 in a friendly played at Hampden Park in November, 2008.
7) His footballing heroes are Diego Pablo Simeone and Julio Cesar Saldana.
8) Atletico's official website ran a story in March 2009, showing Maxi preparing to appear in a video for Argentine musician, Coti. He is said to have played a cameo role in it alongside Diego Forlan.
9) Maxi's extra-time winner in Argentina's last 16 clash with Mexico at World Cup 2006 was voted the goal of the tournament in an online poll held by FIFA. On returning to his hometown following the competition he visited his old school, St Francis Solano, where a tribute was unveiled that showed a picture of him scoring the goal and the words 'Maxi came to my school.'
10) St Francis Solano appears to be something of a breeding ground for sporting icons, as Argentina's Kart champion, Martin Marinkovich attended the school at the same time as Maxi.
