Javier Mascherano established himself as one of the world's best defensive midfielders during more than three years at Anfield.
A dynamic style quickly made him a Kop favourite after signing from West Ham in February 2007.
He'd endured a torrid few months at Upton Park but would find himself rejuvenated under the stewardship of Rafael Benitez.
Despite the presence of Momo Sissoko, Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso, the new boy quickly became a regular in the Liverpool midfield after making his debut against Sheffield United on February 24, 2007.
Three months later he won fans' man of the match for his performance in the Champions League final defeat to AC Milan.
Mascherano's form at Anfield was soon to be rewarded when Diego Maradona handed him the captain's armband for Argentina.
However, his Anfield love affair eventually came to an end - following more than a year of speculation - when he requested a transfer in the summer of 2010.
It is believed that Mascherano's wife could not settle in Liverpool and the inevitable move to Barcelona was completed days before the August transfer window slammed shut.
