PROFILE
Dutch striker Erik Meijer left Anfield to return to the German Bundesliga and sign for SV Hamburg on a free transfer on Monday 11th December 2000.

Meijer joined Liverpool on a Bosman transfer from German side Bayer Leverkusen before the start of the 1999-2000 season, and the boyhood Liverpool fan fulfilled an ambition when he joined the Reds with his total enthusiasm and commitment to the cause endearing him to the Liverpool supporters.

Although not a prolific scorer, Meijer proved to be strong in the air and a constant menace to opposing defences with his desire to chase lost causes, and defending from the front like Ian Rush used to do so effectively.

In total, Meijer made 27 appearances for Liverpool. He didn't manage a league goal but his only two Liverpool goals came in the 5-1 Worthington Cup victory over Hull City at Boothferry Park in 1999.

He didn't start a game for Liverpool in the 2000-01 season, but made three appearances off the substitutes bench against Arsenal, Aston Villa and Manchester City. A spell on loan at First Division Preston North End followed before the move to Kevin Keegan's old club SV Hamburg.
